Starting a Lawn on Till Plain Soil
New lawn hydroseeding in Indianapolis is how most bare yards here go from dirt to turf without the cost of sod. We prepare the soil, mix seed, fiber mulch, starter fertilizer and tackifier in the tank, and spray it on in an even green layer. The mulch keeps the seed damp and in place while it sprouts, and on a typical residential lot the spraying itself takes only an hour or two once the ground is ready. It suits new construction yards, backyards torn up by a pool, addition or septic job, and older lawns so far gone that renovation is not worth it.
Who usually calls us
New homeowners whose builder left a rough-graded yard and a pile of subsoil. Owners who just had drainage work, a sewer lateral or a patio put in and need the disturbed ground covered. People with large lots, a half acre and up, where sod would run into five figures. And anyone tired of patching a lawn that never filled in because the original seed washed off in the first thunderstorm. If your yard is bare, weedy across most of its area, or freshly graded, a hydroseed lawn is usually the right fit. If only a few patches are thin, our overseeding and lawn repair service is the cheaper route, and we will say so on the visit.
What the soil needs first
Central Indiana yards are mostly built on glacial till. Soils like Miami have a silty surface layer over dense till that drains slowly, and construction usually scrapes away or buries what topsoil there was. Before we spray, we loosen compacted ground, rake out rocks, roots and construction debris, and shape the finish grade to shed water off the foundation and send it to a swale, the curb or a storm inlet. Where the surface is mostly clay subsoil, we recommend bringing in topsoil. Seed sprayed onto hard-packed subsoil will sprout, but it struggles through its first summer.
Choosing the seed
Cool-season grasses fit this climate. For full-sun lawns that get kids and dogs, we lean on tall fescue blends, often with Kentucky bluegrass to help it knit and repair. Perennial ryegrass sprouts fast and is a useful nurse grass in a mix. Under the mature maples and oaks common in older Indianapolis neighborhoods we add fine fescues, which handle shade better. We will talk through the mix on the site visit, including how much mowing and watering you want to do.
Timing the seeding
Purdue Extension's guidance is clear that late summer is the strongest time to seed cool-season grass in Indiana: August 15 to September 15 in the northern half of the state and September 1 to 30 in the southern half. We aim for late August into September here. Spring seedings are common around new homes because the closing date does not wait, and they do work, but crabgrass competes hard and wet spring soil slows prep. If you must seed in spring, earlier is better. Summer seeding needs a homeowner willing to water two to three times daily through July heat.
Hydroseeding cost and how it compares
Published national cost guides put residential hydroseeding well below sod per square foot, and the University of Nebraska Extension ranks it as slightly pricier than dry seed while usually coming in under sod. The table below shows the ranges those guides report. What moves your price is the prep: how much grading, how much topsoil, how far the hose has to reach, and whether parts of the yard slope enough to need extra mulch or a blanket. Our written estimate lists those items separately.
Large lots and long hoses
A hydroseeder sprays from a hose that can be pulled well into a backyard, so the truck stays on the driveway or street and nothing heavy crosses your new grade. That makes hydroseeding a good fit for the long, narrow lots in older Indianapolis neighborhoods and the half-acre and larger lots common in newer suburbs and on the edge of the county. It also means fences, side yards and gates are rarely a problem. If the area runs right up to a creek, pond or road ditch, we may add a strip of erosion control blanket at the lowest edge so the first heavy storm cannot cut through the mulch before the grass roots in.
After the truck leaves
The first two to three weeks decide whether a new lawn succeeds. Keep the mulch damp with light, frequent watering, stay off it, and hold the first mow until the grass is about three to four inches tall, usually four to six weeks out. Save any herbicide for later, once the young turf has had several mowings behind it. We leave a written watering and mowing schedule and will come back to touch up thin spots or washed corners. New Lawn Hydroseeding Questions
What does it cost to hydroseed an Indianapolis yard?
Across the national guides we follow, hydroseeding runs $0.07 to $0.35 per sq ft, and HomeGuide puts 5,000 square feet at $1,000 to $1,750. Many companies have a minimum fee of $300 to $500. Grading and topsoil are extra, and once we have measured, the figure we write down is the figure we charge.
Can you hydroseed over an existing lawn?
Over a thin lawn, yes, after scalping or core aerating so the seed reaches soil. Over a thick lawn or heavy weeds it does little; we would kill and clear the area first or recommend overseeding instead.
When is the hydroseed lawn ready to walk on?
Light foot traffic after the first two or three mows, usually six to eight weeks. Keep pets and play off it until then.
Do I need topsoil before hydroseeding?
If the surface is clay subsoil left from construction, yes. If you have a few inches of dark, crumbly soil already, we can usually loosen and seed it directly.
What happens if a storm washes out part of it?
The tackifier holds most storms, but a heavy downpour on fresh ground can cut a rill. Call us and we will re-spray the damaged area.
