Lawns Around Fort Harrison and Fall Creek

Hydroseeding in Lawrence usually means working around trees and water. Fall Creek runs through the northwest part of the city and in places forms its boundary. Fort Harrison State Park covers about 1,700 acres of the former Fort Benjamin Harrison, which held one of the largest hardwood forests in central Indiana. Yards near the park and creek get more shade and more slope than most of Marion County.

Shade changes the seed mix

Under mature oaks and maples, sun-loving bluegrass thins out. We use a fine fescue or shade-tolerant blend on those yards and seed in early fall, when leaves start dropping and light reaches the ground. Raking leaves off a new lawn that fall is part of the plan.

Fall Creek slopes

Fall Creek runs 3.5 miles through the state park, fed by smaller tributaries. Lots near the creek and its side ravines often slope enough to need erosion control. A bonded fiber matrix or straw erosion control blanket keeps soil from sliding into the ravine while roots form.

Redevelopment on the fort

The Army post closed under the 1991 BRAC process, and the land now includes residential neighborhoods, a golf course and the state park. Infill and redevelopment there still bring grading jobs, and newly built areas need silt fence, inlet protection and seeding.

A wet June

Lawrence's normal annual precipitation is 46.6 inches. June is the wettest month at almost 6 inches and February the driest. Seeding a slope just before June is risky, and we plan around it.

Older yards

Much of Lawrence is established neighborhoods, and the most common need is lawn repair: thin turf, bare patches under trees and areas torn up by utility work. Slurry overseeding after core aeration works well on those.

Lawrence Questions

Grass will not grow under my trees in Lawrence. Can hydroseeding help?

Often, with a shade-tolerant fescue blend seeded in early fall. Very heavy shade may need some limbing up as well.

My yard slopes to a ravine off Fall Creek. What do you recommend?

Stapled blankets or a bonded fiber matrix spray on the slope, with regular hydroseed on flatter parts.

Do you seed around utility trenches and repairs?

Yes. Trench lines and torn-up strips are a common lawn repair job.

Why not seed in late May?

June is the wettest month here, and heavy rain on a new slope is the most common cause of washouts.
