Getting Permanent Cover on Disturbed Ground
Builder and commercial hydroseeding in Indianapolis covers the big, open ground that development leaves behind: subdivision common areas and lot frontages, detention and retention pond banks, warehouse pads and their perimeter slopes, road shoulders and utility corridors. A truck-mounted hydroseeder can cover acres in a day from the edge of a site, without driving equipment across freshly graded ground. For general contractors and developers, that speed is the point. Bare soil is a liability until it has vegetative cover, both for erosion and for closing out a stormwater permit.
The permit side
Indiana's Construction Stormwater General Permit, administered by IDEM, applies to construction activity, including clearing, grading and excavation, that disturbs one acre or more. In the permit's own wording, it also reaches lots under an acre when they are "part of a larger common plan of development or sale," which is how most subdivision lots end up covered. Coverage requires a Notice of Intent and a stormwater pollution prevention plan, and the program exists mainly to keep sediment from eroded soil out of the water. Since May 1, 2025, Indiana law has prevented local construction stormwater ordinances from being stricter than the state permit. In practice, that means the plan for your site sets the seeding, mulching and control measures we install, and we work to it.
Temporary versus permanent seeding
Not every area is ready for final grass. Stockpiles, phased lots and areas that will be disturbed again in a few months often get a quick temporary seeding of annual grass with hydromulch to hold the surface. Final grade areas get permanent seed mixes suited to their use: turf-type mixes for lawns and commons, tougher low-maintenance mixes for basins, ditches and back slopes. We can spray both on the same visit and mark which is which on your site map.
Ground conditions around Indianapolis
Much of the new development in the metro is going onto former farmland. Indianapolis alone still has some 14,600 acres of farmland inside its boundaries, and the surrounding counties have far more. Those soils formed on glacial till and are fertile, but mass grading strips the topsoil and exposes dense, slow-draining subsoil. Thunderstorms, which supply most of the area's roughly 42 inches of annual rain, hit that exposed surface hard. Heavier hydromulch rates, a tackifier, and blankets in concentrated flow paths are what keep the seed on those sites. Where the engineer has specified topsoil respread before seeding, we can spread and fine grade it ahead of the hydroseeder so one crew covers both steps.
Working with your schedule
On builder jobs we can seed lots as they reach final grade instead of waiting for a whole phase, which keeps the exposed area small. For commercial sites we coordinate with the paving and landscape trades so we are not spraying ahead of curb work or after sod has gone down. We bring our own water when a hydrant meter is not available. If you need a seeding before an inspection or a Notice of Termination, tell us the date when you call. Late-season jobs that miss the fall window can get a temporary cover now and a permanent seeding in spring, and we will schedule the return visit when we price the first.
How hydroseeding contractors price these jobs
Commercial seeding is priced mostly by area, with adjustments for slope, mulch rate, access, water and mobilization. Consumer cost guides publish per-acre figures, and public bid tabulations show what municipal jobs have drawn. Those ranges are in the table below. Per-square-yard pricing for hydroseeding alone was not something we could confirm from a current published source, so we do not quote one here. We price each site from the plans and a walk of the ground, and our estimate separates seeding, mulch, blankets and silt fence so you can match it to your budget lines.
Basins, swales and outlots
Stormwater basins are among the hardest areas on any site to get grassed. Their slopes face the water, their floors flood and dry out, and mowers often cannot reach them. We seed basin side slopes with mixes that tolerate both, cover them with heavier mulch or blankets, and leave the normal pool edge for wetland plantings if the plan calls for them. Outlots and future-phase pads that will sit for a year or more get a seeding that holds the soil without needing regular mowing, which keeps maintenance costs down until that land is built on.
What we need from you
The site plan or erosion control sheet, the seed and mulch specifications if the engineer called them out, the area to be seeded, and a contact on site. With those we can give you a firm number and a date. Hydroseeding companies that start without them tend to guess, and guessing on a permitted site costs more later. Get a free estimate

Published Costs for Large-Area Hydroseeding
| Measure | Published range |
|---|---|
| Per acre (LawnStarter) | $2,136 to $4,897 |
| Per acre (Fixr) | $2,000 to $4,000 |
| 1 acre (HomeAdvisor) | $2,600 to $8,700 |
| 1 acre (HomeGuide) | $5,000 to $8,500 |
| Municipal park bid, 2023 (City of North Little Rock, AR) | $2,595 and $3,325 per acre |
These are published consumer and public-bid figures, not a quote. Mulch rate, slope, water, access and mobilization change the number. What you pay is the total on the quote you sign.
How We Handle a Site
1. Plan review
We read the erosion control sheet and seed specs and confirm areas and phasing.
2. Walk the site
Access, water source, slopes and flow paths checked on the ground.
3. Estimate
Seeding, mulch, blankets and controls priced on separate lines.
4. Install
Controls first where needed, then seed and mulch to the specified rates.
5. Follow-up
Thin areas or storm damage reseeded so the site reaches final cover.

Why Choose Us for Builder & Commercial Hydroseeding
We read the plan
Seeding and controls follow the stormwater plan for the site.
Phase-friendly
Lots seeded as they reach grade, keeping exposed ground to a minimum.
Separate line items
Easy to match to budgets and change orders.
Own water supply
We can haul water to sites without a hydrant meter.
Builder & Commercial Hydroseeding Questions
Do you work as a subcontractor for builders and GCs?
Yes. Most of our commercial seeding is done for builders, site contractors and developers. Send the plans and we will price to them.
Can you seed lots one at a time as they finish?
Yes. Seeding lots as they reach final grade keeps exposed soil small and is often easier on the schedule than waiting for a whole phase.
What is temporary seeding?
A quick-growing annual grass sprayed with mulch to hold soil on areas that will be disturbed again. It is not a final lawn, but it keeps sediment in place for months.
Do you install silt fence and blankets too?
Yes. Silt fence, storm inlet protection and erosion control blankets are all work we do ourselves, so one crew can handle stabilization from start to finish.
How much area can you seed in a day?
It depends on access, water and mulch rate, but a truck-mounted machine covers acres in a day on open ground. We give you a schedule with the estimate.
